چکیده

We report the detection of a radial velocity companion to SDSS J091709.55+463821.8, the lowest mass white dwarf currently known with M ∼ 0.17M⊙. The radial velocity of the white dwarf shows variations with a semiamplitude of 148.8 ± 6.9 km s and a period of 7.5936 ± 0.0024 hours, which implies a companion mass of M ≥ 0.28M⊙. The lack of evidence of a companion in the optical photometry forces any main-sequence companion to be smaller than 0.1M⊙, hence a low mass main sequence star companion is ruled out for this system. The companion is most likely another white dwarf, and we present tentative evidence for an evolutionary scenario which could have produced it. However, a neutron star companion cannot be ruled out and follow-up radio observations are required to search for a pulsar companion. Discovery of an Ultracool White Dwarf Companion

The discovery of a low luminosity common proper motion companion to the white dwarf GD392 at a wide separation of 46 is reported. BV RIJHK photometry strongly indicates suppressed flux at all near infrared wavelengths. Thus, GD392B is one of the few white dwarfs to show collision-induced absorption due to the presence of photospheric H2 and the first ultracool white dwarf detected as a companio...

θ Hya : spectroscopic identification of a second B star + white dwarf binary

We report the identification, in an Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer (EUVE) spectrum, of a hot white dwarf companion to the 3rd magnitude late-B star θ Hya (HR3665, HD79469). This is the second B star+white dwarf binary to be conclusively identified; Vennes et al. (1997), and Burleigh & Barstow (1998) had previously reported the spectroscopic discovery of a hot white dwarf companion to the B5V star...

A Possible Brown Dwarf Companion to the White Dwarf Gd1400

An unresolved, likely L dwarf companion to the DA white dwarf GD1400 is reported. This would be only the second such system known, discovered 17 years after the prototype L dwarf, GD165B, was determined to be a companion to a white dwarf. Photometric observations and model predicted stellar parameters of the well studied white dwarf primary indicate that GD1400B has J−K & 2.0 and MK = 12.13 mag...

Extremely low mass white dwarfs are very rare objects likely formed in compact binary systems. We present MMT optical spectroscopy of 42 low mass white dwarf candidates serendipitously discovered in a survey for hypervelocity B-type stars. One of these objects, SDSS J0917+46, has Teff = 11,288 ± 72 K and log g = 5.48 ± 0.03; with an estimated mass of 0.17 M⊙, it is the lowest gravity/mass white...
